Healthy Doses of Cynicism.

Lover of all things Dylan Moran e.g. stand up, Black Books etc. Bit of an Anglophile but really just an average Australian teenager, who against her better judgement is pursuing a history arts degree at Sydney University.

Russell Brand Destroys MSNBC Talk Show Host for Treating Him Like Shit

“Casual objectification” is an excellent term for not only what these people were doing to him, but for pretty much the entire institution of “celebrity.”

Also, Russell Brand is very funny. These people have no idea how to handle intelligent discourse blended with humor. They are speaking very different cultural languages. It’s a fascinating thing to watch.

I decided to break the law to provide a necessary medical service because women were dying at the hands of butchers and incompetent quacks, and there was no one there to help them. The law was barbarous, cruel and unjust. I had been in a concentration camp, and I knew what suffering was. If I can ease suffering, I feel perfectly justified in doing so.

Dr. Henry Morgentaler, a Canadian doctor who was arrested four times for performing abortions, but whose arrests eventually led to the 1988 Canadian Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion in the country. He died this week at the age of 90. Good obit in the NY Times.

When Rik Mayall came to rehearsals for his episode in Blackadder II, the contrast between his style and Rowan’s was astonishing. It was like seeing a Vermeer next to a van Gogh, one all exquisite detail with the subtlest and most invisible working and the other a riot of wild and thickly applied brushstrokes. Two utterly different aesthetics, each outstandingly brilliant. With Rik you could see the character grow out of his own personality. Flashheart was an emphasised and extreme version of Rik. In Rowan’s case it was as if Blackadder was somehow conjured up from nowhere. He emerged from Rowan like an extra limb. I am as capable of envy and resentment as the next man, but when you are in a room with two people who possess an order of talent that you know you can never even dream of attaining, it is actually a relief to be able to do no more than lean back and admire like a dewy-eyed groupie.
